This 2012 introduction (although it was released to breeders in 2004) is considered an extremely cold hardy (Zone 2b), tough American Elm native descended from a lone survivor of Dutch Elm Disease found in 1994 near Fargo, ND. (All of the elms around it had succumbed to Dutch elm disease while this tree still remains in perfect health today.) The broad spreading, vase shaped canopy delivers quick shade in harsh environments. This tree features the coveted umbrella-like form of the classic American elm (similar to the one in the Frontage Road’s play area).
Dark green foliage turns yellow in fall. The leaves are coarsely-toothed.
Fast grower.
It averages 3-4’ of growth annually; provides quick shade.
Although considered tolerant of Dutch Elm Disease; Elms are a preferred species for attack by Japanese Beetles so they are good candidates for regular applications of the annual “pour around the base of the trunk” systemic insecticides. #15 gallon
