Elderberry, Adam’s Black

A robust and dual-purpose shrub that combines ornamental appeal with edible potential and ecological value. In late spring, the plant is festooned with broad, flat clusters of creamy white blossoms that perfume the air and draw bees and pollinators. As summer progresses, these blossoms transition to generous clusters of deep purple-black berries by late summer. Though the raw berries should not be eaten, when properly cooked they make superb syrups, jams, wines, and medicinal preparations.
