A rugged-looking tree with glossy green deeply-lobed leaves (fiddle-shaped) which are whitish-gray on the underneath side.
Large, ornamental acorns (with maturity) form in a deep cup with the upper scales forming a fringed border.
The acorns are the largest of all native oaks in the U.S.
The leaves, which reach up to 12” in length, are among the largest of the oaks.
Attractive, corky bark (with maturity) adds interest, especially in winter.
Fall foliage is yellowish-brown to purplish.
Leaves hang on tree into winter.
Picturesque, open, somewhat rounded shape.
Tolerates a wide range of soil types and air pollutants.
Tolerates drought once established; a great xeriscape tree.
Slow growing (less than 12” per year); reaching 15-20’ in 20 years is considered average for a Bur Oak.
More tolerant of our alkaline conditions than other Oak varieties, including Pin Oak.
